Another beautiful summer weekend with much needed rain interruptions. It was a record breaking summer all the way around. Mother Nature blessed us with great weekends, gasoline prices were low, and people were staying close to home and spending more. Our beach revenues were up 38% during the season on top of a 26% increase in 2014. HUGE! All our efforts to improve and promote our beaches over the past 14 years finally kicked in. Asbury Park is back but will be challenged to now management that success. It’s what we all hoped for. Only in Asbury Park!
The Darlene Love – Steven Van Zandt concert last Saturday night at the Paramount Theatre was one of those very special Asbury Park musical moments. When the curtain was raised there was Darlene and Steven backed up by a 60 piece orchestra and later by 20 backup gospel singers. I leaned over to Patti and whispered “this is going to be one amazing night.” It was! Paul Schaefer joined the band for a couple of numbers. Darlene was off the charts. She performed all the songs from her new album including my favorite “Forbidden Nights.” After the show there was a VIP gathering in Convention Hall featuring the Weeklings and numerous special guests. A special thanks to Sammy Boyd and his right hand Judy Yaccarino who put it all together. Only in Asbury Park!

The NFL season kicked off last week. There are so many great places to watch football in the city. On opening night last Thursday, I watched the game at Johnny Mac’s outside bar with former Mayor Ed Johnson and Stone Pony Manager Caroline O’Toole. Very cool! Hey, how about those Giants?
Last week I shared that New Jersey Rock Legend Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes (SSJ) will be leading a delegation from the Jersey Shore to Havana, Cuba from December 17 – 22, 2015 for a people-to-people community exchange program. The historic visit is a part of the Local-2-Global Initiative project of Ed JohnsonAP and Beverly Beveridge Jersey Shore PR Agency in partnership with Choice Aire Airlines. The visit is centered around the 31st International Havana Jazz Festival in which Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes (SSJ) will perform. The program also includes visits to local schools for music sessions with students and an urban jam session with local artists. I am excited to report that the Asbury Park Music Foundation (APMF) will be joining the delegation to document the trip. As President of the APMF, I think it is only appropriate that I also go. We had a great press briefing last Saturday at Havana Tropical Café in Highlands, N.J. It was the perfect place to set the tone for the trip. The food and music were awesome. It is no surprise that the trip is just about sold out but there are still some seats available. For more information contact: Ed Johnson (732) 776-9890 EdjohnsonAP@live.com EdjohnsonAP.com or Beverly Berveridge (732)440-4209 or Jerseybeveridge@gmail.com . I will try to provide you with weekly updates. Stay tuned!
The Asbury Park Historical Society was recently notified by the state Office of Historic Preservation that the historic Stephen Crane House has been officially added to the National Register of Historic Places. The National Register is the nation’s official list of cultural resources significant in American history, architecture, archeology, engineering and other similar categories. The Stephen Crane House, at 508 Fourth Avenue, was placed on the State Register of Historic Places on February 16, 2015 and the Historical Society expects to take ownership of the house in the very near future. The AP Historical Society will be hosting its monthly meeting tonight starting at 7:00pm at the Crane House. Only in Asbury Park!
Friendly Reminder: The City Wide Yard Sale is scheduled for Saturday, October 3, 2015 and will be here before you know it. It will be held rain or shine and will take place from 9:00am to 3:00pm. To get rid of clutter for a good cause, please email your yard sale address to Sonja at Obriensonja@aol.com .
As usual, there is a ton of great stuff going on this weekend. This is my favorite time of the year when summer takes its time making way for the fall. There will be great music at all our clubs, great shopping in all our wonderful shops and of course, amazing dining at some of the best restaurants in New Jersey.
